I was motivated to look into this subject from this twitter post. In the last few years, it’s been a lot of conversation about sex and gender.
French Feminist, Simone De Beauvoir wrote a book published in 1945 The 2nd Sex.
Before reading her book, Keep in mind—I’m pro-family. I’m all about the nuclear family (https://www.britannica.com/topic/nuclear-family). I have no hate for other groups. But I’ll be reading her book for a counter-perspective, not because I’m a fan—or endorse feminism. Just a disclaimer, I greatly support women empowerment.
I took notes from researching her:
• Two factors explain the evolution of women's condition: participation in production and freedom from reproductive slavery
• Beauvoir writes that men oppress women when they seek to perpetuate the family and keep patrimony intact.
• Beauvoir writes that "to ask two spouses bound by practical, social and moral ties to satisfy each other sexually for their whole lives is pure absurdity".
Beauvoir thinks marriage is a perverted institution oppressing both men and women.
• She writes that "marriage, by frustrating women's erotic satisfaction, denies them the freedom and individuality of their feelings, drives them to adultery".
My take on this:
One of the main things I’ve taken from researching her is that she’s views marriage s bondage and reproduction as slavery—meanwhile, blacks in America were made slaves. Feminism often speaks against European patriarchy.
American culture speaks of sexual liberation for women from the standpoint of women are repressed. If your sex life is terrible, blame yourself and your partner, not patriarchy. After all, you choose your partner, and you have the ability to speak up. If your sex life is terrible—use your words and communicate your feedback.
What happens when a man or woman argues against the institution of marriage? It’s one thing to say it’s not for you—but when you speak of disdain. Why?
